Odd sizing

I am a size 16au in pants. I ordered an XL and when they arrived they were way too big so I exchanged them (very easy to do) for a size L. These are too small! Uncomfortably so unfortunately. Material seems like great quality, customer service responded to me as soon as I requested an exchange. It’s just a shame there is such a difference between sizes!
